The International Association of EMTs and Paramedics (IAEP) sent an application to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in early January to unionize Monongalia Emergency Medical Services, or Mon EMS.
With the application filed, Mon EMS stands to become the first Local in West Virginia for the IAEP, joining the ranks of over 12,000 EMS professionals across the country who are current members.
"These units are already benefiting from IAEP membership," said IAEP National Director Phil Petit. "We want Mon EMS to have the same resources and protection."
Should Mon EMS vote to certify the IAEP as their representative in the workplace, they would gain union benefits including scholarship programs, Union Plus benefits and discounts that help with everything from prescriptions to auto savings, and assistance programs for those in need through NAGE Charities.
"IAEP members have a voice at the table as we discuss the impacts of the ongoing pandemic with their management teams," said Petit. "We’re working together to preserve their rights and make sure they’re being protected."
